Mike "Reed" Mulford
Mike was born in Lakeland, Florida, but has lived in
the Houston area for most of his life. In high school (Alief Elsik H.S.) he was
awarded the LOUIS ARMSTRONG JAZZ AWARD. Upon graduation, he went on to college,
majoring in music. Attending Blinn College in Brenham '81-'83, he walked away
with OUTSTANDING SOLOIST AWARD at the SAM HOUSTON JAZZ FESTIVAL.
From '84-'86 he was at the Southwest Texas State University where he was awarded
OUTSTANDING SOLOIST at the WICHITA JAZZ FESTIVAL in Kansas. He capped-off his
college career at the University of Houston in '89-'91 by walking away with
OUTSTANDING SOLOIST again at the SAM HOUSTON JAZZ FESTIVAL. Mike started playing
professionally at age 20 working in the Houston area, TC and The Cannonballs
being one of his first real gigs back in 1986. Mike also played with numerous
show bands, including THE NORM ALLEN SHOW out of Austin. In addition to working
with other groups, in 1988 he also formed his own jazz group, FAHRENHEIT, which
still performs whenever possible.
In 1989 he began a 4-year stint with MYSTI DAY & VICE VERSA as well as gigging
with T.C. & THE CANNONBALLS, appearing on their CD & later working with the
legendary JOEY LONG. In 1991, together with Victor Delagarza, he formed a new
version of FAHRENHEIT as a duo, working from '91-'95 at THE ROOF in the WESTIN
OAKS HOTEL & as a 5 & 6 piece unit working at the original CODY'S & doing an
8-month stint at CODY'S IN THE VILLAGE as well as featured spots at the HOUSTON
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL, the AUSTIN JAZZ FESTIVAL and JAZZ ON THE PLAZA in
downtown Houston.
He and Victor began working the duo at LANDRY'S in Kemah in '93 & were a fixture
there every summer till 2003. Mike began playing with The Green Onions Rhythm &
Blues Revue in March 1994 and left The Green Onions in July 2007 after 13 years.
In 2005 Mike became a proud artist endorser for P. Mauriat saxophones and still
is today ."I'm very exited about the "Mike Reed Band" project, which has been
long anticipated, since contemporary jazz and R&B is where my heart is."
Since 2004 the band has played venues such as The Houston International
Festival, The Kemah Boardwalk, Market Street Summer Jazz Concert Series, Sugar
Land Town Square Concert Series, 95.7 The Wave's "Smooth Jazz on the Bayou"
Summer Concert Series, The famous Sunday Jazz Brunch at Ruggles Grill, plus many
club dates and private parties. I'm privileged to share the stage with some of
the most talented and exciting musicians around. These katz take the tunes to
another level!!
In addition to The Mike Reed Band his most recent project is a new band called
The Revelators which plays a funky mix of Soul, R&B, Blues, Classic Rock and
Motown and is still playing with TC and The Cannonballs 23 years after joining
the band.
Needless to say, Mike stays musically busy and stylistically diverse which is
right where he wants to be!!
